Meg M.
Q: Who are you? Where are you from?
A: I’m Meg! I grew up in rural Maine and I currently live in Boston.
Q: What’s your background? What did you do before Modulate?
A: I fell in love with Boston when I was a kid and dreamed about living here - I made that dream a reality when I moved here after graduating from Babson College in 2021 with a degree in Business Administration. I’ve worked in a couple different industries, including consulting, staffing, and software development - regardless of the industry, I always found myself drawn towards client-facing, relationship-focused roles.
Q: Why are you joining Modulate?
A: Realistically, toxicity and hatred are not things that can ever be truly eliminated. But if you reduce the amount of space they have to roam free, and you send a clear message that they aren’t welcome in your environment, then you limit their ability to spread and to hurt. Modulate is tackling this challenge head on with ToxMod, and I want to contribute what I can to the cause.
Q: What’s your ideal work environment? Any special strategies you use to stay effective?
A: I enjoy a nice balance of independent and collaborative work - I like being able to put my head down and focus while knowing that I can quickly get in touch with others if I need help or advice. I can’t say I have any special strategies, but I like to have an extremely clear understanding of what’s expected of me, and regular feedback regarding my performance. I also try to anticipate the effect my actions will have on others before I take them.
Q: Tell us about something you must have in any culture you join?
A: Tact. Honesty without kindness is cruelty, kindness without honesty is manipulation. Tact is how you strike the right balance. I also believe in assuming positive intent from others, or essentially giving them the benefit of the doubt, especially when you’re getting to know them and aren’t familiar with their communication style yet. A good sense of humor is important too.
Q: Who are you outside of work?
A: If I’m not working, I’m probably outside running (currently training for my first half marathon). I also enjoy photography, baking, thrifting, reading, knitting, ballet, listening to music, road trips, and tending to my houseplants. Plane travel also gets a special mention - I traveled in an airplane for the first time at the age of 20, so the experience is still very novel and exciting for me.
Q: What’s something you’re great at that few people realize?
A: I’m very good at gift-giving. I’m observant and good at remembering small details, so when birthdays or holidays roll around, I consult my internal files and put together tasteful and relevant
gifts for friends and family based on what I know of their interests and personalities. Everyone loves when I come home for Christmas.
Q: Leave us with a fun tidbit - a favorite joke, a story from your past, an obscure riddle, whatever you like!
A: A long time ago I worked at a chocolate shop - ask me about that - and at the end of a long day, I was at the cash register with a customer. They thanked me for my help as I was grabbing their receipt from the card machine. Instinctively, I tried to say “Your receipt is in the bag” while also saying “You’re welcome” in response to their thanks. What ended up coming out of my mouth was “You’re in the bag!” We had a good laugh.
