Q: Who are you? Where are you from?
A: I am Nathan & I’m originally from a small town in Massachusetts.
Q: What’s your background? What did you do before Modulate?
A: My professional background started in government (I worked for the U.S Embassy in Kampala, Uganda) and moved into tech some years ago. My first step into tech was starting my own company and has since been focused on early stage startups.
Q: Why are you joining Modulate?
A: I’m a long-time gamer and also primarily an offline gamer because of the constant racism and toxicity present in online gaming communities. I also firmly believe that I want to spend the rest of my “career” with companies that are trying to leave a “net positive” impact on the planet or society. Below is a comic from Gary Larson called the Far Side that my father sent me as a child when I was playing too many video games…I never thought I’d work in this industry but my father apparently knew something I didn’t….
Q: What’s your ideal work environment? Any special strategies you use to stay effective?
A: I’ve worked from home for the last 6-ish years so I’d say that I don’t yet have an ideal hybrid work environment. I try to work in sprints, which can be difficult as a people manager, but you will generally see me with my Bose headphones on if I am working on something and trying to get into flow. Time boxing & and calendar holds are also a go-to tools I leverage.
Q: Tell us about something you must have in any culture you join?
A: Good people & autonomy.
Q: Who are you outside of work?
A: An activist of sorts. Someone who is passionate about nature. A life-long learner. A crazy uncle. A loyal friend. Someone who doesn’t fit neatly into boxes and is a bit of a walking contradiction.
Q: What’s something you’re great at that few people realize?
A: I wouldn’t say I’m still great at it but I was one of the top ranked Rogues in the world….World of Warcraft (Arena and general PVP) many years ago.
